Pediatrician perspectives on symptom presentation and treatment of acute allergic reactions

BackgroundAnaphylaxis remains difficult to diagnose and epinephrine underused.ObjectiveTo better understand the thoughts of pediatricians regarding when acute allergic reactions constitute anaphylaxis should be given by conducting an anonymous online survey.MethodsThe survey consisted 8 case-based scenarios with following 2 questions on each case: (1) does this case represent anaphylaxis? (2) if patient immediately presented you, would you treat during reaction?ResultsA total 1001 responses were analyzed. When assessing all cases combined, there was discordance in whether a represented administration warranted 8% cases. An average 5% respondents suggested that but not warrant epinephrine, whereas 3% did warranted.ConclusionThe results reveal is among reaction considered warranted. These data highlight need for continued improvement definition education diagnosis management anaphylaxis.
